Projects concluded in the March 2011 Financial Year

Mobile Library and Science Laboratory projects:

Laboratories

The above mobile library can be wheeled to wherever it is needed. It contains books and reference materials covering subjects required by individual schools with a weighting towards maths & science.

The Telkom Foundation donated 125 of these mobile libraries resourced for grade R to 7 books. The schools targeted were from rural and peri-urban areas. The Department of Basic Education agreed to partner with the Foundation and provided much needed advice on how to approach the implementation phase. The library project aimed to achieve the following:

  • Support education and training of learners
  • Add value to classroom based learning
  • Ensures easy access to the learning material
  • Increase and improve human resource capacity to deliver high quality education.
  • Address the issue of literacy in education
  • Create a reading culture to disadvantaged learners

The same 125 schools who received the mobile libraries also received the Mobile Science Laboratory

Laboratories

These mobile laboratories are fit for the purpose of training courses for teachers in Maths, Physical Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship. This project aimed to achieve the following:

  • Raise participation and performance of historically disadvantaged learners in Senior Certificate, Science, Maths and Technology.
  • Help to increase number of learner Engineers

150 Schools pilot project in the Western Cape:

This project formed part of the computer laboratories and Internet connectivity donation project. Classrooms were enhanced by adding projectors, laptops for the teachers and Interactive Whiteboards.

The project aimed to address the same benefits experienced in the Computer Labs and Internet connectivity project, to bridge the digital divide in disadvantaged communities.

The project was successfully completed in 2010. The National Education curriculum is implemented via the donated equipment. Utilization is at a 100% mark.

This project was geared towards bridging the digital divide and formed part of the computer labs and 150 schools pilot project in the Western Cape. The main focus of this project is on quality improvement in primary and secondary education and access to Information and Communication Technology. The second is to expand access to education and improve its relevance to Africa’s development. This was a Telkom Foundation initiative in partnership with the Department of Education in the Western Cape

Computer Laboratory project:

150 Schools pilot project in the Western Cape

650 schools in all 9 provinces received a donation of computers networked with broadband internet connectivity and other ICT peripherals. The computer lab project aimed to achieve the following:

  • Create communities of educators and learners that use ICT in education
  • Transform learning in the classroom
  • Address the infrastructural requirements in education
  • Address computer skills
  • Address internet based skills

Disaster Relief Funds:

Yeoville Explosion 2010:

  • The Foundation team partnered withwith Johannesburg Disaster Management.
  • 5 families consisting of 16 individuals all of whom are Non-South African were assisted by the Foundation. Alternative interim accommodation was sourced for the victims
